What a fantastic term 3 we have had in Reception! Our topic question was ‘ Do you thinkesauras? ‘ in which we learnt all about dinosaurs.
In English we learnt to tell the story of ‘Dinosaur Roar’, the children used an acting approach to retell the story in front of their friends. They also produced some fabulous writing including writing facts about dinosaurs and labeling dinosaurs.
In Maths the children impressed with their ability to add and subtract using objects. Some children had a go at writing number sentences too!
The children have hatched their own dinosaur eggs this term and all took home a new mini dinosaur pet. They arrived into the classroom one morning to find it had been trashed! After some great detective skills the children worked out it must have been a dinosaur and made predictions about which dinosaur they thought had done it. Luckily we caught the dinosaur on our CCTV and the children were able to see it was ferocious T-Rex who had trashed the classroom. Although they were very brave and actually hoped the dinosaur would come back if we left the doors open!
We had a week of open mornings where the Reception parents were invited to come and join us in the classroom. They were able to see a Phonics and English lesson and spend the morning with their child enjoying activities. When their parents were in the children enjoyed sharing an exploding volcano Science experiment with them.
Here are a few more learning opportunities Reception have had this term:
- Chinese New Year
- Safer Internet Day
- Using different art materials to paint dinosaurs
- Exploring different rhythms in music
- Dinosaur digs
- Building dinosaur traps
- Learning the digraphs of phase 3 phonics
We have had a busy but very fun term and are looking forward to our next topic ‘Far Far Away’ in which we will be learning all about castles.
